Connecting Incarcerated Parents with their Children via Personal Recorded Stories

Current Pause in Operation:  Since Mid-March 2020, Rochester Storybook Project has been on “Pause” since our access to the Monroe County Jail has been temporarily suspended due to safety concerns resulting from the Covid virus pandemic.  At this time, we expect to be back in operation inside the Monroe County Jail when the Monroe County Jail System advises us that the virus issue is under control to their satisfaction.  In the meantime those interested in volunteering once our program resumes, should contact Britt Hopkin at (585) 309-6345.  We are eager to speak with you about our program.

The Rochester Storybook Project—an outreach program of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Henrietta.  NEW Location — we operate now in the Monroe County Jail (Downtown Jail), located at 130 Plymouth Avenue, South in downtown Rochester. This program makes it possible for incarcerated parents to read a story to their children.

The inmate chooses a short story and with the assistance of volunteers, records the reading of the story. A CD is mailed to their child along with a copy of the storybook. Each child can enjoy reading along while listening to their parent talking directly to them—helping to ease the pain of separation. Children who are read to by their parents are more likely to develop an interest in reading. For the parent, the program offers much comfort and a deeply moving experience as they make a loving connection with their child.

We are currently working in two venues within the the Monroe County Jail (MCJ).  They are a unit named the Veteran’s Unit where inmates who have served in the US Armed Forces.  This unit provides specialized programs for these veterans which addresses their special needs.  We have an additional venue located on the 5th Floor or MCJ which serves female inmates and selected male inmates from the facility’s General Population.  Recording dates for our volunteers are shown for each venue on our “Events” Calendar located on this website under “Recording Dates”.
